From pollen and dust to food and drugs, many types of allergies negatively affect the health of adults and children. Each type of allergy will trigger a range of symptoms, and recognizing these signs can help diagnose the problem. Here are some of the symptoms that Atlanta parents may identify their child as having – or perhaps have experienced themselves – during an allergic reaction.

What Are the Main Symptoms of an Allergy?

Skin Redness and Hives

An allergic reaction may result in red, itchy, bumpy, swollen or dry skin. Conditions such as hives, eczema and contact dermatitis are common signs of an allergy, and could appear anywhere on the body. Many allergens cause skin conditions, and this includes foods like peanuts, milk and eggs, and substances such as metals, latex, drugs and pollen.

Chest Tightness and Breathing Difficulties

Many allergens cause breathing difficulties of varying severity. Pollen, dust, mold, pet dander, food, perfume and other substances may cause tightness in the chest, wheezing, coughing and even asthma attacks. Breathing issues won’t always be related to allergies, but allergy testing can identify if there is an issue.

Runny or Blocked Nose and Sneezing

You may be wondering if your sinus issues are because of an allergy. There are various causes of sinusitis, a runny nose or congestion, but allergies are a common factor. Seasonal allergies like hay fever frequently lead to nasal problems, though dust, mold spores, pet dander and food are additional triggers.

Itchy or Watery Eyes

Irritating substances can cause persistent irritation of the eyes. Airborne pollen will often aggravate the eyes, resulting in itching and redness. Birch tree pollen is common during the spring when birch trees are in bloom. This pollen often causes watery eyes, nasal congestion, headaches and sneezing. Other tree pollens such as oak, alder, elm and willow also trigger similar symptoms.

Swelling of the Face, Lips and Tongue

Swelling is a common allergy symptom caused by food, medication, even insect bites or stings. Contact with an allergen causes temporary swelling and possibly skin hives or redness. Some people also experience swelling after applying makeup and other beauty products.

Stomach Pains and Diarrhea

Stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting are usually associated with food allergies. While these symptoms may be the result of a food allergy, food intolerances could also be to blame. Additionally, seasonal allergies can trigger stomach issues along with other associated symptoms.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction causing dizziness, extreme breathing difficulties, vomiting, nausea, a fast heartbeat and confusion. Anaphylaxis is unlikely to be a reaction to hay fever, dust, mold and other such common allergens. However, foods like tree nuts and peanuts, insect stings and medicines could result in a severe allergic reaction.
