Are you struggling with persistent nasal congestion, postnasal drip or frequent sinus infections? These symptoms could be signs of nasal polyps – small growths that develop in the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses. Though painless and non-cancerous, nasal polyps can actually affect your breathing and sleep quality significantly. Thankfully, effective management from an Atlanta ENT specialist can prevent serious complications and improve your overall health and well-being.

How an ENT Specialist Manages Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are commonly caused by inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses. However, the triggers for such inflammation can vary, and the cause of polyp development will help your ENT specialist determine how to best treat the condition.

Testing and Diagnosis

Diagnosis usually begins with an evaluation of the patient’s symptoms and medical history. The ENT specialist may then examine the nasal passages for signs of polyps. This is called nasal endoscopy, and is performed with a device (endoscope) that’s inserted into the nose for a detailed visual exam. CT scans may also be used to identify polyps and their possible causes.

Nasal Polyp Medication

Medication is the first treatment approach to address polyps, and aims to reduce inflammation and decrease polyp size. Among the appropriate medications, using corticosteroids is an effective treatment, particularly for less severe cases. Symptoms typically lessen within two weeks of taking medication. And if either nasal congestion or sinusitis are identified as the cause, our ENT doctor may also recommend decongestants or antibiotics.

Sinusitis Treatment

Chronic sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses that lasts at least 12 weeks. For those with persistent sinusitis symptoms, nasal polyps are not uncommon. In fact, the Allergy & Asthma Network reported that 5–12% of people globally have chronic sinusitis, with 25–30% of these people also having nasal polyps. The benefits of nasal scoping (nasal endoscopy) are seen here, as this exam identifies sinusitis and allows for personalized treatment.

Nasal Polyp Surgery

When medical treatments like corticosteroids fail to resolve a case of nasal polyps, surgery may be recommended. Endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive treatment that removes the polyps (and other nasal passage obstructions). And depending upon the severity and location of the polyps, alternative surgical procedures are also available.

Treatment for Underlying Conditions

Treating any underlying conditions is a crucial part of managing nasal polyps. If allergies are responsible for nasal inflammation, addressing these with medication or immunotherapy can prevent the polyps from returning. Similarly, reliable ENT treatment options for asthma can manage symptoms and reduce inflammation. By responding to the underlying issues patients can significantly reduce their risk of polyp recurrence, and improve nasal health long-term.
