If you suffer from allergies related to indoor allergens like dust, mold, and pet dander, spring cleaning is a perfect opportunity to remove allergens from your home while improving overall air quality. Read on for three key strategies you can use to ensure your spring cleaning produces an allergy-friendly living space for you and your family.

1) Clean fabrics that can trap allergens, particularly in heavily used rooms such as the bedroom and living room

To effectively clean allergens from the bedroom and living room, vacuum mattresses, furniture, and carpets, and wash curtains, hypoallergenic pillows, and throw rugs in hot water. If you are not already using allergen barrier covers on your mattress and pillows, consider adding them now. If you are already using such covers, check them for damage and replace them if worn through. Ensure your vacuum has a small-particle or HEPA filter so that allergens are trapped and not recirculated into your environment.

2) Remove mold and mildew from bathroom and kitchen surfaces

Because of moisture, mold and mildew can thrive on bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Minimize moisture by fixing leaks, drying surfaces after showering or doing dishes, and ensuring proper ventilation, including dusting or rinsing exhaust fan covers. Replace shower curtains if there are signs of mold or mildew. Wash throw rugs and towels in hot water, and thoroughly clean surfaces of mold and mildew with a bleach-based cleanser.

3) Clean meal preparation and dining areas of food waste that enables pests and mold to thrive

Food debris becomes a source of allergens when it is allowed to grow mold or become a fuel source for allergen-producing household pests such as mice or cockroaches. Mop floors, thoroughly clean the refrigerator and mop up all excess moisture, discard all expired food items, and clear cupboards of crumbs and other food debris.

Do keep in mind that if you are the allergy sufferer in your family, spring cleaning may trigger your allergic symptoms, so you may want to ask someone else to do the cleaning instead.
