Unlike many food allergies, a shellfish allergy can develop at any age. In fact, many adults seek out food allergy treatments after unexpectedly developing a severe shellfish allergy in later years. But with foods like crab, lobster, mussels, oysters and scallops having many nutritional benefits, simply avoiding all shellfish is not an ideal solution. So, just how dangerous is shellfish to Atlanta residents – and what treatments are available if you notice any symptoms?

How Dangerous Is a Shellfish Allergy?

A shellfish allergy is one of the most dangerous allergies, with the potential to cause anaphylaxis. Fortunately, a shellfish allergy will only cause mild to moderate symptoms for most people. These symptoms may include a mild skin rash or hives, temporary shortness of breath, a cough, nasal congestion, vomiting and diarrhea.

However, eating shellfish causes anaphylaxis for some shellfish-allergic people. In these cases, symptoms include severe swelling of the throat, restricted breathing, a rapid pulse, dizziness and loss of consciousness. Immediate use of epinephrine is necessary in cases of anaphylactic shock, and the affected person should also get immediate assistance from emergency services.

How Common Is a Shellfish Allergy?

A global study found that between 0.5% and 2.5% of the population has a shellfish allergy, with around 1.3% of children showing symptoms after eating one type of shellfish. A study into shellfish allergies in the U.S. pediatric population found that 54.9% of diagnosed children have visited the emergency room at least once after consuming shellfish. And since people of all ages may develop allergies, it’s essential to know the signs of a shellfish allergy.

What Types of Shellfish Allergies Cause Allergic Reactions?

There are two main types of shellfish – crustaceans (crab, lobster, prawns and shrimp) and mollusks (clams, mussels, oysters, scallops and squid). Of these two types, crustaceans are more likely to cause allergic reactions in both adults and children. While shrimp is the most common cause of shellfish allergies, many people react to multiple varieties of shellfish.

What Are the Best Treatments for a Shellfish Allergy?

With the possible dangers of a shellfish allergy, shellfish-sensitive people should carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Upon use, a controlled amount of adrenaline relaxes the airways and restores the heart rate, preventing potentially fatal consequences.

Your allergist will also provide continuous care for your shellfish allergy. The process begins with food allergy testing to better understand allergens causing a response. Any subsequent therapies may include medication like antihistamines or corticosteroids, and oral immunotherapy treatment for allergy desensitization.
